Pompeii was an amazing experience; we had an interesting and enthusiastic tour guide, and he made the experience more enjoyable. Before we met our tour guide, our bus driver told us about an amazing restaurant with delicious pizza. While I was enjoying the unparalleled beauty of the once great city, I could not help but think of eating the pizza I was promised.
After the delightful day in Pompeii, I was ready to eat. Upon arrival, the restaurant looked absolutely magnificent. When we walked in, the interior looked lavish with its décor. The way the staff treated us quickly changed my perception of the entire establishment and our bus driver. It did not take long for us to figure out we were in a tourist trap. While we were walking to our section, a staff member snapped at some of our group about which tables to sit at. The staff was being unclear, so we asked for a menu. We were told there were not menus because they only serve three options, and they each cost 10€. They had salad, cheese pizza, and tomato sauce and rice.
My wallet was hurting as much as my stomach was when I found out I was going to pay 10€ for a measly cheese pizza. There was a group of Australian tourists sitting behind me that had arrived shortly before us. They were complaining about the low quality of the food compared to its price when they received slices of cheesecake. Their server brought them their checks, and they saw that they had been charged for the cheesecake. A man from their group stood up and followed the server with the receipt. He was trying to get his attention because he had not ordered the cheesecake, so he did not know why he was being charged.
The server apologized and said that they still had to pay for it because it was brought out to their table. The Australian man walked back to his table unhappily and loudly complained about how crappy the restaurant was for their service. They were discussing the overpriced mediocre-at-best food while we were ordering ours. In my opinion, they were not far off on their description of the food.
